Red Sox notebook: Bogaerts has been great, but Padres aren’t living up to hype The San Diego Padres came into the season with as much hype as any club in recent memory.Under owner Peter Seidler, the Padres have cast aside their reputation as an irrelevant also-ran to become one of the premier franchises in MLB. San Diego has spent aggressively to assemble a star-studded roster, and this offseason the club shocked the baseball world by signing former Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts to an eye-popping 11-year, $280 million deal.Between that addition and others, the Padres were a popular preseason World Series pick, while the Red Sox were mocked and given little chance to contend. As it turns out, winning the offseason doesn’t necessarily guarantee on-field success.Though Bogaerts has been as great as advertised, the Padres have collectively underachieved through the first quarter of the season. San Diego enters the weekend 20-24, good for fourth in a mediocre NL West, and the offense has been shockingly punchless, ranking fourth-worst in runs scored (172) ...

OBF: Hey Joe, go full ‘Town’ or your C’s are going home Joe Mazzulla loves “The Town.”His “Whose Car We Gonna Take?” sweatshirt was the second-biggest star of the Celtics-Sixers series. We’ve been told that Mazzulla watches the 124-minute Ben Affleck film as often as four times a week. The players have become ensnared in his devotion to the Boston/Charlestown-based crime drama. It has become a muse for these Celtics.“I think it’s ‘Whose car are we taking?’ I think that’s the saying,” said Sixth Man of The Year Malcolm Brogdon (via NESN’s Sean T. McGuire) about the team’s connection to the film. “And it’s basically just ride or die for your guys, the guys you’re on the court with, the guys you’re competing with. It’s having the mentality (of) it doesn’t matter what we’re going to get into, we’re going to do it together.”That is true, especially the “ride or die” part.(Spoiler alert) After surviving a botched robbery of Fenway Park, Affleck’s character Doug MacRay pulls a Tom Brady and departs the chilly climes of Greater Boston for F...

How long can the show go on? 7 more rock acts we may not see in concert again Back in February, I wrote a pair of columns about 14 aging superstar musical acts and the likelihood we’d see them play the metro again. It proved to be a hit with readers, so I’m back with more. Here’s a look at seven senior acts and the chances we’ve already seen the last of them in concert. The WhoRoger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who In Concert – New York, NY at Madison Square Garden on March 3, 2016 in New York City. But the 1978 death of drummer Keith Moon and a 1979 crowd crush at a Cincinnati concert that killed 11 fans were the first steps toward the end of the band. Townshend, Daltrey and bassist John Entwistle went on to make two albums with drummer Kenney Jones, but Townshend decided it was time to call it a day. They launched a farewell tour in 1982 ...

A Ramsey County deputy’s widow had her mortgage paid off. Now she wants to help other first responders. Jessica and Dallas Edeburn put a lot of thought into the house they bought together — they wanted to live near both their families and they refinished “every single inch of it” with personal touches to make the home their own. They planned on raising their son there, but now Jessica Edeburn is doing it on her own.Dallas Edeburn, 30, died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart condition last summer. He was a Ramsey County sheriff’s deputy who was in the news in 2021 because he was seriously injured when a suspect smashed into his squad car, causing it to roll over five times; a deputy and officer pulled him out of the squad before it went up in flames. In the months since Dallas died, in all of Jessica Edeburn’s grief, she’s also been surrounded by people supporting her. She said she’s been overwhelmed by it, especially being selected by the nonprofit Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which is paying off the remainder of her mortgage. The Edeburns’ o...

Southern Europe braces for climate change-fuelled summer of drought

Southern Europe braces for climate change-fuelled summer of drought Southern Europe is braced for a summer full of ferocious dry weather. Some regions are already experiencing water shortages, and farmers expect their lowest yields in years.Climate change is making the region hotter, and years of droughts have depleted the groundwater reserves. In Spain, southern France and Italy, the soils are bone dry. Low river and reservoir level are threatening hydropower production this summer.Scientists warn that Europe will experience another brutal summer as temperatures rise. Last year, Europe experienced its hottest on record, which fueled a drought European Union scientists said was the worse in at least 500 years.Spain has been the worst affected by the crisis so far this year.Jorge Olcina is a professor of geography at the University of Alicante in Spain. He said that "the situation of drought will worsen this summer".At this stage, there's also little chance that rain will resolve the drought. Olcina explained that at this time of year, "the only thin...

Bridge: May 19, 2023 A club player came to me as discouraged as a farmer suffering through a late-summer drought.“I make so many mistakes I should start calling them ‘traditions,'” he told me.At four spades, my friend won the first heart with the king and took the A-K of trumps, hoping for a 2-2 break. East threw a heart. Declarer next led the ace and a low diamond.“West won,” South said, “and cashed his high trump. Then I could ruff one diamond in dummy, but I lost another diamond and a club. I think what I learn from my mistakes is how to make the same ones again.”HIGH TRUMPSouth can win the first heart in dummy, cash one high trump, then duck a diamond. If West leads a second trump, South wins, takes the ace of diamonds, ruffs a diamond and comes to his king of hearts to ruff his last diamond, losing a trump, a club and a diamond. If instead West leads a second heart, South wins and leads the ace and a second club to set up a link with his hand. He loses only ...

Ask Amy: I smile when I think how shocked she’ll be when my will is read Dear Amy: As an older male I have seen fundamental changes in all types of relationships. One change is a reduction in work ambition. Some people choose “quiet quitting” – to do as little as possible and still keep their job.I see “quiet quitting” in relationships as well, and my daughter has chosen to quietly quit her relationship with me.She seems happy to see me when we get together (rarely) and there is always a “love you” somewhere – but that’s it.Her mother and I got divorced 15 years ago when my kids were teenagers. They lived with her full time. I know that my ex does her best to poison their relationship with me.My daughter and her husband never proactively contact me or offer to get together, even though I live nearby.I suggest that they come to my home to celebrate my birthday – but it never happens. She and her husband had Easter dinner with her mother, but she didn’t even bother to give me a “Happy Easter” phone call. She even had her mother give her away at her wedding, e...
