LONDON (AP) — A horse-drawn golden carriage. The sound of choristers and trumpeters filling Westminster Abbey. Hundreds of Coldstream Guards throwing their bearskin hats into the air and shouting “hip, hip hooray!” Pop stars, young and old. Not one, but several crowns. And of course, persistent rain. The very British coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla went ahead Saturday seemingly without a hitch.Around 2,000 guests attended the service and many thousands more well-wishers lined the route from the abbey to Buckingham Palace to celebrate the occasion. Some had camped for days in the volatile spring weather to secure a spot along the Mall that would guarantee a view of Charles and Camilla riding in the fairy-tale coach, wearing their crowns. The largest British military procession in 70 years accompanied them back to the palace. Shortly thereafter, Charles and Camilla appeared on the balcony with other senior members of the royal family to wave to the adoring crowds assem...Chicago police officer fatally shot after working her shift

LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Mohamed Salah’s 100th goal at Anfield underpinned Liverpool’s 1-0 win against Brentford in the English Premier League on Saturday. Salah’s 13th-minute strike was far from his best as he bundled the ball over the line, but he became the first Liverpool player to score in nine successive home matches in all competitions.More importantly, the Merseyside club’s sixth straight win moved it to within a point of fourth-placed Manchester United and still in with a shot of qualifying for the Champions League. On the day of the coronation of Charles III, fans jeered the national anthem, “God Save the King,” because of what is perceived to be a long-held opposition toward the establishment. But Salah gave the home fans something to cheer when he scored. He has 30 goals for a third successive season, and fourth in six.It put him level with Steven Gerrard in fifth place on the club’s all-time goal-scoring list with 186.Much has been made of Trent ...McCann back on ice, but not ready to return yet for Kraken

SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Kraken welcomed leading scorer Jared McCann back to practice on Saturday, but coach Dave Hakstol doesn’t expect the forward to be available for Game 3 of the Western Conference semifinal series against Dallas on Sunday.McCann has been out since getting hurt early in Game 4 of Seattle’s opening-round series against Colorado on a hit from Cale Makar that drew a one-game suspension. McCann’s injury has not been disclosed, with Hakstol only saying that he’s working through his “injury protocol.”Hakstol said McCann skated a couple of times while the team was in Dallas for the first two games against the Stars. But Saturday’s optional skate with McCann in a red no-contact jersey was his first stint back with his teammates.“We’ll just keep progressing. I don’t really have an update other than the fact that he’s on the ice and he’s able to be out there with the optional skate today, which is a really good step for him,” Hakstol said. “We’ll just continue progressi...Medina Alert issued for SUV suspected of ramming vehicle off the road

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Michael Andretti is back at the Miami Grand Prix with his financial backers networking throughout the paddock in his bid to land a Formula One team.Andretti Global is one of four known applicants to submit official “expression of interest” documentation to the FIA, which in January created a formal process to explore expanding the grid beyond its current 10 teams. The initial deadline of April 30 was extended to May 15th.The process began after Andretti, who in 2021 failed to purchase the Sauber team, asked the FIA to expand the F1 grid so he could field an American two-car team. Andretti at last year’s inaugural race in Miami went team-to-team in an unsuccessful request to have them sign a petition in support of his efforts. All but two teams have been vehemently opposed to the addition of Andretti — or expanding the grid in general — because they don’t want to dilute revenue.Current F1 regulations contain provisions for up to 13 teams, and the...Driver hospitalized after car goes into Hialeah canal

Last time there was a Hollywood writers’ strike, in 2007, the resulting halt in filmmaking activity depleted the savings of Pam and Jim Elyea’s prop house History for Hire, so much so that they had to defer a dream of owning their own warehouse.Years later, COVID-19 brought another formidable challenge for their North Hollywood business, which has supplied props including period-appropriate luggage for “Titanic” and cameras for Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans.”Now history is repeating itself with a new writers’ strike that began on Tuesday, which is causing a significant portion of local production to shut down.“COVID didn’t kill us,” Pam Elyea said. “I don’t want this to be the thing that kills us.”This week, the Writers Guild of America, which represents 11,500 members, hit picket lines to demand better pay and treatment after contract talks with the major studios broke down.Writers are seeking i...Latest news
