Rockies’ Austin Gomber counting on two-seamer to sink opponents

SAN DIEGO — Austin Gomber is not a grip-it-and-rip-it pitcher. The Rockies’ southpaw utilizes a plus changeup and an effective curveball to confound hitters. But he went into the offseason knowing that he needed to add something new if he wanted to keep hitters honest. So he fiddled with a new grip and started throwing a sinking, two-seam fastball in January. He believes it compliments his four-seamer, which he tends to throw up in the zone.“I felt like hitters were starting to sit on my off-speed stuff, so we thought, how can I make my fastball more effective?” said Gomber, who’ll make his first start of the season on Sunday against the Padres at Petco Park.Last season, when Gomber was relegated to the bullpen for part of the season, his four-seamer was often an ineffective pitch. He threw it 40% of the time but hitters teed off on the pitch, hitting .376.Part of the Nolan Arenado trade with St. Louis before the 2021 season, Gomber was terrific in his f...Keeler: How will Jay Norvell, CSU Rams shock college football? By turning April belly flops into September wins.

FORT COLLINS — At CSU last April, you either sank or swam with Jay Norvell. This April, you belly flop.Officials worked the 11-on-11 portions late in Saturday morning’s practice outside Canvas Stadium. During one red-zone trip, somebody along the Rams offense jumped. A yellow flag shot to the sky like a bottle rocket.PHWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!The scrimmaging … stopped. The talking … stopped. The milling … stopped.A millisecond of uncomfortable, awkward silence hung in the chilly brunch air. Then every CSU player — offense, defense, on the field or on the sidelines — immediately plopped onto their bellies and started doing a quick set of up-downs.“Yeah, we incorporated that, (that if) we have a false start on offense, we started doing up-downs for penalties,” Norvell, the Rams’ second-year coach, explained later. “Just a reminder to concentrate and focus.”If spring 2022 was about the install in FoCo, kids, spring 2023 is about the details. 3-9 te...1 killed, 3 others hospitalized in West Hills shooting

OAKLAND — For two innings, the debut of Athletics right-hander Shintaro Fujinami seemed too good to be true.Which was exactly the case. The Los Angeles Angels chased Fujnami with an 11-run third inning in a 13-1 win over the Athletics Saturday at the Coliseum before a crowd of 15,757.Including two inherited runners that scored on long reliever Adam Oller, Fujinami finished giving up eight earned runs in 2 1/3 innings, with an ERA that will sit at 30.86 until his second start next Saturday.“Could have been better, obviously, but I was glad to get on a big league mound,” Fujinami said through translator Issei Kamada. “But getting on a big league mound is not good enough and next time I’ll try to do better.”Athletics manager Mark Kotsay chose do dwell on the first six outs rather than nine hitters than reached base in the third before he came out to take the ball from his 28-year-old Japanese import.“The first two innings I thought Fuji was gre...One dead in motorcycle crash on Hwy-1 near Bolinas

NEW YORK (AP) — Camillo Doval retired Giancarlo Stanton on a game-ending, double-play grounder with the bases loaded and the San Francisco Giants hung on for a 7-5 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday.Doval gave up Aaron Judge’s RBI single in the ninth, the slugger’s third hit, but earned his first save when Stanton hit a ground ball to shortstop Brandon Crawford, who started a double play that withstood a video review. Second baseman Thairo Estrada made a low throw to first baseman LaMonte Wade Jr., who scooped the ball.“Live and it looked before they paused, he kept it long enough,” Crawford said of Estrada. “LaMonte was definitely on the bag. I wasn’t too worried.”There were four pitch clock violations, the most of any game in the first three days of the new rule. Two were by Doval in the ninth inning, and the Giants’ Taylor Rogers and the Yankees’ Albert Abreu had one each.“We didn’t see any of that sort of thing in spring training,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler sai...Zach Eflin shines, Rays offense roars in 12-2 rout of Tigers

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays are already getting a return on their investment in Zach Eflin. The 28-year-old right-hander is off to a nice start after signing the largest free-agent contract in Rays history, pitching five strong innings and getting lots of offensive support in a 12-2 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Saturday.Yandy Díaz and Wander Franco each had three hits and three RBIs for the Rays, who scored seven times in the third inning to ruin right-hander Spencer Turnbull’s first major league outing for the Tigers since June 4, 2021.The Rays have made the playoffs each of the past four years and advanced to the World Series during the 2020 pandemic-shortened season. Offensive shortcomings contributed to coming up short in the postseason each of those appearances.Manager Kevin Cash and his players think this year’s lineup has the potential to be better, even though most of the faces are the same.“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it agai...Latest news
