JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military said its forces attacked targets in Syria early Sunday after six rockets were launched from Syrian territory in two batches toward Israel in a rare attack from Israel’s northeastern neighbor. After the second barrage of three rockets, Israel initially said it responded with artillery fire into the area in Syria from where the rockets were fired. Later, the military said Israeli fighter jets attacked Syrian army sites, including a compound of Syria’s 4th Division and radar and artillery posts. The rocket firings came after days of escalating violence on multiple fronts over tension in Jerusalem and an Israeli police raid on the city’s most sensitive holy site.In the second barrage, which was launched early Sunday, two of the rockets crossed the border into Israel, with one being intercepted and the second landing in an open area, the Israeli military said. In the first attack, on Saturday, one rocket landed in a field in the Israeli-annexed G...Blumenthal breaks leg at UConn parade, to undego surgery

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said he expects to undergo surgery to repair a broken leg he suffered Saturday during a victory parade for the University of Connecticut men’s basketball team.In a tweet Saturday night, Blumenthal said a fellow parade goer tripped and fell on him during the event in Hartford, Connecticut, to celebrate the team winning the NCAA basketball title on April 4 in Houston. The 77-year-old Democrat said he was awaiting “routine surgery” on his femur scheduled for Sunday and expects a full recovery.“What can I say, I love a parade!” he tweeted.Connecticut’s other U.S. senator, Chris Murphy, tweeted that “after he broke his femur he got back up, dusted himself off, and FINISHED THE PARADE. Most Dick Blumenthal thing ever.”Connecticut state Rep. Matt Blumenthal tweeted that he heard his father “was also on the reviewing stand for a while. Tough as nails, and on the mend shortly!”Blumenthal is serving his third term in the Senate after ...Concert review: Guitarist John Frusciante saves otherwise dreary Red Hot Chili Peppers concert

Just because three of the four Red Hot Chili Peppers are now in their 60s, that doesn’t mean they’ve grown up.After all, manic bassist Flea handstand-walked his way onto the U.S. Bank Stadium stage Saturday night and proceeded to perform the show clad in nothing more than sneakers and a purple skirt. But for all the forced wackiness of RHCP, their concerts tend to be darker and gloomier than one might expect, and Saturday was no different with an odd, stilted pace and a rough sound mix that buried the vocals in mountains of bass. The big news these days is the return of guitarist John Frusciante, who played on the band’s biggest albums and is now in his third run with the guys. The show opened with Frusciante, Flea and drummer Chad Smith tearing through an instrumental jam. And Frusciante was clearly having the time of his life, thrashing away at his six-string while trying to keep up with Flea’s fast fingers. It set the pace for a show filled with extended sol...Two officers killed following traffic stop in Wisconsin, DOJ says

Minnesota United’s record went to five and oh no on Saturday. After a five-match unbeaten start to 2023, the Loons gave up multiple goals for the first time this year in a 2-1 loss to Chicago Fire at Soldier Field.Minnesota (3-1-2) had won three straight road games, but their franchise-record-tying form on the road was ended by Chicago (2-1-3), which had three home draws to open the season.Minnesota had been getting results while operating in narrow margins; and they came up well short Saturday.“Our first-half performance was the worst we’ve played all season,” manager Adrian Heath said. “I thought we were second-best in every department. Individually, I think they bossed us in the first half all over the field.”When the Loons traded for Kei Kamara in the summer of 2020, there was a gentleman’s agreement he wouldn’t play against his former team, Colorado Rapids, that season.MNUFC could have used a similar setup Saturday, as the 38-year-old forward scored...Northwestern offense overpowers Danes after competitive first half

The Rockies rocked LoDo Saturday night with a four-run ninth inning.Alas, the rally fizzled when Carl Edwards struck out Kris Bryant with two men on base, leaving the Rockies as 7-6 losers in front of 34,503 fans at Coors Field. The Rockies, losers of five of their last six games on the heels of a 2-0 start, got another shaky performance from a starting pitcher and received a pedestrian performance from their offense until Mike Moustakas crushed a two-run homer to right field in the ninth. It was Moustakas’ first homer in a Rockies uniform. That set the fuse for Colorado’s rally, which included a two-run single by pinch-hitter Elias Diaz. But it was too little, too late.“Obviously we did come up a little bit short but we battled all the way until the end,” said Moustakas, who hit his homer after a 10-pitch at-bat against lefty Anthony Banda. “It was a lot of fun, even though we did lose. But it kind of sets the tone for the rest of the season for us. Ther...1 person injured after shooting on I-880 near Fremont: CHP
