(CNN) — Authorities in Canada and the US each announced the launch of investigations Friday into the implosion of the Titanic-bound submersible that killed all five passengers. It is unclear whether the probes by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and US Coast Guard would be one single investigation or two separate, simultaneous examinations. The US National Transportation Safety Board will assist the Coast Guard, the agency tweeted. The announcements came as investigators continued to scour the ocean floor for any insight into the “catastrophic implosion” on the Titan submersible that suddenly lost communication with its mother ship, Polar Prince, last weekend, officials said.FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES“The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) is launching an investigation into the fatal occurrence involving the Canadian-flagged vessel Polar Prince and the privately operated submersible Titan,” the agency announced in a statement.A dayslong international sea...Russian military accuses Wagner leader of attempting coup

(CNN) — Russia’s domestic intelligence service has opened a criminal case against Yevgeny Prigozhin, the chief of private military group Wagner, after he appeared to cross a red line with the Kremlin on Friday when he vowed to retaliate against the country’s military leadership for what he described as strikes launched against his forces. The open confrontation was sparked by a series of Telegram posts on Friday, where Prigozhin accused Russian forces of striking a Wagner military camp. “A huge amount of our fighters were killed,” he said, in a radical escalation of a longstanding feud with Russia’s military leaders.Russia’s Ministry of Defense denied the claims, calling it an “informational provocation.”The mercenary, who has frequently criticized Russia’s traditional military hierarchy, then warned that retribution would be meted out. “We will deal with those who destroy Russian soldiers and return to the front, justice for the troops will be restored, and then justice fo...Special counsel asks for December trial date for Trump in Mar-a-Lago documents case

(CNN) — The special counsel’s office has asked for Donald Trump to be tried in December in the Mar-a-Lago documents matter, because of how classified records must be handled carefully within the criminal case.A federal judge previously put the trial on the calendar for mid-August but a delay to the date was expected. December, however, is not yet a firm date, and the Trump team may ask for a different schedule. The request from prosecutors on Friday came amid a trio of new filings governing preparations to be done on the case before trial by both the Justice Department and Trump’s defense team.“This case is not so unusual or complex … because it has only two defendants, involves straightforward theories of liability, and does not present novel questions of fact or law. However, the case does involve classified information and will necessitate defense counsel obtaining the requisite security clearances,” prosecutors wrote in the filing.“In addition, the associ...Investigation underway into cheating accusations at Mass. police training academies

An investigation is underway and testing has been suspended after cheating accusations at Massachusetts police training academies, the state Municipal Police Training Committee’s executive director said on Friday. Municipal Police Training Committee Executive Director Robert Ferullo discussed the situation in a letter sent to police chiefs. In his letter, Ferullo said officials found several officers at academies in Holyoke and Boylston “compromised the integrity of testing procedures and materials in violation of our agency’s honor code and academy policies.”Ferullo said the committee had launched an internal investigation as of Friday. He also said the committee will also bring in an outside investigator to review the matter and provide policy recommendations. As investigations continue, Ferullo said the committee has suspended testing and added new measures including a new course quiz and test questions and enhanced test-taking software with more security measures. To da...Dorchester man sentenced to life for binding, burning New Jersey woman in Bridgewater

Across the span of nearly a week, the saga of a lost submersible that had gone into the depths of the ocean to see the Titanic wreckage rippled across the national and global conversation — culminating in news that the craft had imploded and its five occupants were dead. But a far bigger disaster days earlier, the wrecking of a ship off Greece filled with migrants that killed at least 80 people and left a horrifying 500 missing, did not become a moment-by-moment worldwide focus in anywhere near the same way.One grabbed unrelenting, moment-to-moment attention.
