A wounded Palestinian child, crying and clutching onto adults carrying him into a hospital. A deceased Israeli soldier’s loved ones, their faces wracked with grief as they mourn. Dozens of small posters, each one picturing a missing Israeli, as another sign blares just one word, scribbled in bright red: “Pain.”The images tell a story of unspeakable tragedy and palpable fear, as the war between Israel and Hamas prepares to enter its third week. The deadliest of the five Gaza wars, it has left more than 1,400 people in Israel dead, as well as more than 4,100 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry. The destruction is clear throughout Gaza, as Palestinians desperately search for survivors and are forced to walk through rubble left behind after Israeli bombardments. On Friday afternoon in the Braddock Elementary School cafeteria, Reva Smith looked on as dozens of students swarmed toward the line to get a slice of pizza.Fridays are pizza days on the Annandale, Virginia, campus, but Smith, the cafeteria manager, made sure to motivate students to explore the salad bar, too. There, the options include tomatoes, cucumbers and apple slices.Every school in Virginia’s largest district now has a salad bar, a step Fairfax County tried to take before the pandemic but then paused as the coronavirus spread. And with the help of Shaun Sawko, the county’s new executive director of food and nutrition services who has also worked in D.C. and Montgomery County schools, the school system is redefining how school lunches look and taste.“We all had school lunch and sometimes it gets a little boring … corn dogs and pizza and chicken tenders,” said Smith, who’s been at Braddock for about a year. But three months into the job, Sawko has already moved away from the food...Americans working to balance student loan repayments and holiday travel, survey says

Student loan payments restart this month after a three-year pandemic pause, and it’s impacting how some people travel.According to a recent survey by travel deal site Going.com, 63% percent of respondents that had student loans said the repayments influenced their holiday travel plans. That same survey found that 38% said they would be more budget conscious, 17% percent said they would take fewer trips and 7% said they would visit cheaper destinations. Only 1% said the payments would cause them to take a shorter trip.Katy Nastro, a travel expert with Going.com, said for those hoping to score a deal, one option is to search for two cheaper one-way tickets than a more expensive roundtrip ticket. Another way to save, she said, is by expanding airport searches when booking.“If there was a really fantastic deal out of Newark or Baltimore from the D.C. area, take advantage of that,” Nastro said.Nastro strongly suggested those who have still not booked Thanksgiving or Christmas travel to do...Detienen a un ciudadano iraquí cerca de la embajada de Israel en Buenos Aires por “inconsistencias” en su documentación

It’s as if one front in the Israel-Hamas war is playing out on the streets of Berlin. The main battleground has been an avenue lined with chicken and kebab restaurants in Neukölln, a neighborhood in the south-east of the city that’s home to many Middle Eastern immigrants. Some pro-Palestinian activists have called for demonstrators to turn out almost nightly, and, as one post put it, turn the area “into Gaza.”On October 18, hundreds of people, many of them teenagers, answered the call.“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” chanted many in the crowd as a phalanx of riot police closed in on them. Berlin public prosecutors say the slogan is a call for the erasure of Israel, and have moved to make its utterance a criminal offense. While similar scenes have played out across much of the world, for Germany’s leaders, they are profoundly embarrassing and strike at the heart of the nation’s identity, on account of the country’s Nazi past.
