More and more young Europeans obtain a tertiary degree and the average number of early leavers from education and training is in decline. Those are some of the encouraging developments revealed by the 2023 edition of the Commission's Education and Training Monitor, launched by Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth Commissioner Iliana Ivanova (pictured) at the European Education Summit last week. The Monitor also shows that almost two thirds of recent graduates from vocational education and training (VET) experienced work-based learning. On the other hand, the report highlights remaining challenges, such as the prevalent underachievement in basic skills, widespread inequity in education access and performance, the gender gap in tertiary qualifications, and the lack of women in STEM disciplines. The 2023 edition of the report zooms in on teacher shortages in Europe and the various efforts to make the teaching profession more attractive. When Bernie Sanders launched his first presidential campaign in early 2015, the political world could not have been more different than it is today. His run set in motion a movement — or, really, a series of movements that clashed and blended over the ensuing years, reshaping both the Democratic Party and the country. On today’s episode of Deconstructed, we’re trying something new: Host Ryan Grim narrates the audio version of his new book “The Squad: AOC and the Hope of a Political Revolution.” Macmillan Audio has allowed Deconstructed to run edited excerpts. But we’ve spliced Grim’s audiobook with interviews, speeches, and newscasts, making it into an audio documentary for the podcast. Our first episode takes you inside the first Sanders campaign, where we explore the tension between the right wing of the Democratic Party and Sanders’s “political revolution.” Part 2, coming out later this week, will look back at the historical forces that pushed members of the Squad into politics...Freezing rain causes accidents that leave 3 dead in Germany while Munich airport suspends flights

Lyon will return to Marseille amid heightened security measures Wednesday to play a game that was postponed after the team’s bus was attacked by fans throwing rocks in October. The rescheduled match comes just four days after the death of a fan ahead of a French league game that marked a new low in a season marred by violence. The match between Marseille and Lyon was initially scheduled on Oct. 29 but was postponed after fans threw rocks and other projectiles at the Lyon bus and then-coach Fabio Grosso needed stitches in his forehead after being hit by broken glass. Lyon fans have not been allowed to travel to the rescheduled game, which takes place in the wake of the incident in the western city of Nantes, where a fan was killed during a fight close to the stadium before a game between Nantes and Nice. The match in Marseille will be under close scrutiny, with local authorities under pressure to deliver an effective security plan.On Monday, French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Ca...An explosion leveled a home in Arlington, Virginia, as officers tried to serve a search warrant

HYDERABAD, India (AP) — Eight people were dead as Tropical Storm Michaung began making landfall along India’s southeastern coastline Tuesday, bringing with it torrential rains and strong winds, officials said. The cyclone started crossing the coastline of Andhra Pradesh state with maximum sustained winds of 90-100 kph (56-62 mph) and gusts up to 110 kph (68 mph), said Sunanda Sharma, an official at the state’s Cyclone Warning Center. “It will take three hours for the entire system to cross the coast and complete the landfall,” she said, adding that there could be a storm surge and more heavy showers in the next 24 hours before the storm weakens. Another state in the south, Tamil Nadu, experienced days of heavy rains in the lead-up to the storm. Downpours triggered accidents that led to at least eight deaths across four vulnerable districts in recent days, said C. Muthukumaran, a disaster management official in the state. In the capital city of Chennai, rain from the stor...Latest news
