Drier weather arrives; more rain in the extended forecast for Southern California

Skies will clear over Southern California Thursday as a storm moves out and drier weather settles in, for now.“Some showers and mountain snow showers will linger over the area today, and some rain and snow showers are expected on the north,” the National Weather Service office in Los Angeles said. “Otherwise, dry and cool conditions are expected through Monday.”After that, however, more precipitation is in the forecast as another Pacific storm system moves into Southern California.The extended forecast for Los Angeles shows rain on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. A Stockton man who works as a driving instructor has been accused of orchestrating about 20 car crashes and collecting more than $35,000 in the resulting insurance payouts.He was arraigned Wednesday on 54 felony counts of insurance fraud, assault with a deadly weapon and reckless driving after a joint investigation by the California Department of Insurance and the San Joaquin County district attorney’s office, said a press release from the insurance agency.The 43-year-old man is also a AAA tow truck driver, the statement said.His procedure in most of the crashes was to drive in another driver’s blind spot and accelerate when the other vehicle started to change lanes, causing a collision, the investigators said.From 2017 to 2022, the man claimed over $86,000 in damages and was paid more than $35,000 by insurance companies.His dashcam videos of the crashes were reportedly included in his YouTube channel, Stockton Drivers. SAN CARLOS – A 40-year-old unhoused woman was arrested on suspicion of taking a vehicle, colliding with two others and leading sheriff’s deputies in a brief pursuit Tuesday in San Carlos.Deputies were called around 10:30 a.m. to the 700 block of Old County Road for a report of a stolen vehicle, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. While en route to the scene, deputies learned the suspect had also collided with another vehicle.When they arrived, the deputies located the stolen vehicle and tried to pull it over, but the woman drove away from them, Sgt. Scott Mueller wrote in a news release.Deputies pursued the vehicle but quickly called off the chase. Mueller said the suspect continued to drive away and collided with a second vehicle.Soon after that collision, deputies found the stolen vehicle abandoned on Circle Star Way. One person died late Wednesday after a single vehicle crashed on Interstate 880 in Milpitas and burst into flames, according to the California Highway Patrol.The CHP received reports of the crash at about 11:55 p.m. According to a news release from the department, a 2004 Toyota was traveling southbound on I-880, just north of Highway 237 near Anthony Spangler Elementary School. SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The body of radio host Jeffrey "JV" Vandergrift was found floating in the San Francisco Bay by Pier 39 on Wednesday, according to the Chief Medical Examiner. He was 55. The discovery marked a tragic end to a one-month-long search for the beloved longtime radio host. Vandergrift was reported missing to the San Francisco Police Department on February 23. Suspect shot, killed during standoff with San Jose police Police found his body just before 5 p.m. Wednesday and said there was no evidence of foul play.
