By SETH BORENSTEIN (AP Science Writer)The fingerprints of climate change are all over the intense heat waves gripping the globe this month, a new study finds. Researchers say the deadly hot spells in the American Southwest and Southern Europe could not have happened without the continuing buildup of warming gases in the air. Thanks to years of research and more powerful computers, scientists can now determine almost in real-time whether climate change is contributing to the intensity of heat, storms, floods and drought — and by how much.A generation ago, calculating such connections took up to a year, but researchers at World Weather Attribution made their conclusions about this summer’s heat wave in less than a week. Their study is the first to look at three simultaneous heat waves on three different continents. These unusually strong heat waves are becoming more common, Tuesday’s study said. The same research found the increase in heat-trapping gases, largely from ...The European Court of Human Rights refuses to prevent the ongoing and severe ill-treatment in detention of children and other vulnerable individuals

In Amsterdam, at the Rembrandt House Museum, you could recently hear the unfamiliar sound of a tattoo needle buzzing in a room next to priceless artworks from the Dutch Golden Age. Tattoo artist Henk Shiffmaker and other top Amsterdam artists have adapted some of Rembrandt’s famous sketches to make them suitable for tattooing permanent souvenirs on keen visitors. What Shiffmaker values is the juxtaposition between highbrow and lowbrow – inking sketches of the famous Dutch masters onto the skin of visitors. As Shiffmaker explained to The Associated Press, “it’s great that these two worlds can visit one another. Actually it’s really one world because it’s about art.”Indeed, body art and more conventional art forms are intimately linked, and just as every great tattoo begins with a carefully-rendered design, many leading tattoo artists’ careers have begun rooted in their innate artistic talent.Just look at the story of Jay B., an up-and-coming Italian-born tattoo artist based in Barcel...Britons care more about costs than their carbon footprint, finds Tootbus study

The first week of July is expected to be the hottest on record as climate change continues to heat up the world, according to UN officials. As London Climate Action Week recently wrapped up, business leaders and policy makers made it clear that ambitious action needs to be taken now to make sure we achieve our target of reducing greenhouse-gas emissions to net zero by 2050.Recently, there has been no shortage of sustainability-focused initiatives in the transport sector to reduce emissions, as well as global temperatures. From a £200m pledge for nearly 1000 new electric and hydrogen buses to the removal of all diesel-only trains by 2040, it would seem Britain is leading the charge on tackling the climate crisis. But recent research shows that other countries don’t agree – ranking London as one of Europe’s least sustainable cities.New research by Tootbus, a clean energy sightseeing company, shows that European tourists rate London poorly as a sustainable city – with only 2% of French r...UPS, Teamsters Union agree to tentative deal on new contract; imminent strike avoided
